ENVIROMENTAL RESPONSABILITY

OCATI’s® commitment to protecting the environment goes well beyond our responsible operating practices and our sustainable use of water and energy; we aim to give as much back to nature as we can. With this in mind, we have planted around 7,000 hardwood trees in our six-hectare farm in Anapoima, Cundinamarca. Species include: Teak, Melinas, and Mahogany, which is critically endangered in Colombia. The Melinas have been planted specifically to provide a sustainable raw material to manufacture our wooden pallets, which are used for overseas transport.

Green Race

The Fundación Natura’s green race promotes the care of forests and water, through a sporting event that mitigates the carbon footprint. It also contributes to the restoration of forests by allocating the funds collected for this purpose. Ocati donates annually 1,200 kg of fruit to give participants a healthy snack during the race.

NACEDEROS FOUNDATION

REFORESTING THE SOURCE OF THE RÁQUIRA RIVER IN RÁQUIRA, BOYACÁ

This project, which started in late 2014, seeks to protect the Ráquira River; a water source threatened by developers seeking to build weekend houses in the region. Traditionally an Oak forest area, Ráquira has a long history of deforestation caused by the local ceramic industry’s need for wood to fire their products. Through this project, the Foundation aims to create a culture where forests are valued as indispensable elements of a sustainable future. Since 2004, the Nacederos Foundation has been dedicated to buying land to reforest with native species and preserve natural water sources.

RECOVERING THE CHECUA RIVER BASIN

Fundación Nacederos has bought and reforested nearly 52 hectares of land on the previously tree-depleted river source north of Bogotá, in Nemocón, Cundinamarca. The native trees, as well as the vegetation that grows under and around them, stabilize the river current, allowing more water to be available during the dry season and less run-off during the wet season.

PROTECTING A WATER SPRING IN TINJACÁ, BOYACÁ

The Foundation has also purchased 6 hectares of land for reforestation efforts near a naturally occurring spring in Tinjacá, Boyacá, with the aim to create a water source in the region that can benefit both local wildlife and vegetation. This additional source of water has also helped farmers in the region to tend their crops.
